Organic Centre Potato Day March 16
Our 10th. annual Potato Day coincides this year with The International Year of the Potato. We are delighted to welcome Minister Trevor Sargent who will attend in the afternoon. The principals, teachers, students and parents of local Primary Schools are invited to attend and meet the Minister, who has recently launched the 'Meet the Spuds!' Potato Growing Challenge for Primary Schools. Speaking at the launch Minister Sargent said, "It is vital for food security in Ireland and worldwide that more people become involved in growing their own food. The skills to grow potatoes and other nutritional food are an important part of a rounded education. I also hope more young people will think about agriculture as a career as more schools grow more food."
We are also delighted to welcome back Dave Langford, with his extraordinary collection of over 120 varieties of potatoes. Dave is a member of the UN ad-hoc steering committee for the International Year of the Potato, and a passionate collector of potato varieties for many years, from the common to the obscure.
The Eco-Shop will offer 18 varieties of organic seed potatoes, while local men Philip McGuinness and Noel Carter will demonstrate coping with the use of the traditional Fermanagh Loy. Gardeners will offer tips on blight control, The Grass Roof Cafe will have a range of potato dishes available and tours of the Centre will take place throughout the day. Everyone Welcome!
