Apple Day at The Organic Centre Sunday 7th October

The Organic Centre, Rossinver, Co. Leitrim hosts the annual Apple Day on Sunday, 7th October from 11 am - 5 pm. Tickets are €5, concessions €3, children go free.

The Centre's fruit expert, Phil Wheal, will be joined on the day by Doug Dudley from the Irish Seed Savers in Co. Clare for an exciting programme that includes guided tours through the centre's orchard, grafting and pruning demonstrations, apple identification and a talk by Doug Dudley about the connection between organic soils and the nutritional value of apples.

If you plan to grow your own apples or have questions about varieties, rootstocks or orchard management this is the day for you. Also of high interest for REPS applicants.

Apple trees and seeds will be on sale and The Grass Roof Cafe will serve invetive apple dishes throught the day.

The Organic Centre's orchard contains around sixty apple trees, half of them Irish varieties and the other half selected because of their resistance to diseases.

On Saturday, 6th October, Phil Wheal will give a workshop on home wine making from 10 am - 5 pm, cost €90; there are a limited amount of places available.

The Fruit Autumn and Winter workshop will take place on 17th November and includes advice on pruning and propagating your own stock, unusual fruiting plants, forest gardens and landscaping with fruiting plants. Cost of the day is €85.
